The Newfoundland was entered into the AKC in 1886. It is currently #35 on the AKC's Most Popular Dog List. They are nicknamed Newfs by many. The Newfoundland is a long distance swimmer and does have life saving skills. He can be Black, Brown, Grey and Black and White in color. Newfs are considered Nanny Dogs. The must have a "Sweetness of Temperament is the Hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important characteristic of the breed"
